An Earner’s Story: Adriana Cubero

My name is Adriana Cubero and I am a Country Manager for EarnUp. I’ve been with the company for three years. Currently, I’m responsible for managing operations and business development for our team in Costa Rica. I’m also a wife and mother to a curious and compassionate nine year old daughter. To relax, I enjoy going to the beach and watching movies with my family.

1. How do you balance your personal and working life?

That’s a very good question. Sometimes I don’t even know! We make it happen.

When I’m at work, I always make sure that I finish my “to-do” list. When I’m at home, I prioritize quality time with my husband and daughter. Kids can be demanding! And they will let you know in a very smart way if you are failing with your quality time. I learned that it makes things easier to be open and explain how work helps us in our lives.

When we talk with our kids it helps them understand why we need to balance our time, especially when working from home and keeping up with school. The secret is to keep work, school, and play time separate.

2. What do you think are some of the biggest challenges working parents face?

Time. I really think we as parents would like to do so many things at the same time, but sometimes it is impossible. Many parents have long scheduled hours and long commutes. Most of the time they get home, they’re tired, or their kids are asleep. Parents don’t want to miss any events or activities with their kids. I think we have a battle each day against time. Luckily, this is not the case for me at EarnUp.

3. How do you feel EarnUp supports you when it comes to balancing work along with your at-home responsibilities?

I am very grateful to work here! It’s been almost three years. I can’t explain how happy I am to have the opportunity of working at a place like this.

EarnUp is very people-oriented! Whenever employees are facing difficult situations, my colleagues are always there to help or provide the necessary arrangements to make things better.

The fact that we are able to work from home part of the week, but also have an office, gives the perfect balance.

4. Who’s your role model?

My grandfather is my role model. He is my “father on the job!” He taught me all of the important things in life. He taught me that family should always come first. He also taught me:

  • Maybe you can be replaced from some places, but you will always have a place with your family.
  • Be thankful for what you achieve in life. Not everyone has the same opportunities.
  • Don’t waste an opportunity! Everything is a learning experience.
  • Work is important, but understand that it is a means to achieve your goals. It’s not your only goal in life. Work to live. Don’t live to work!

5. Do you have any advice for other working parents to prevent burnout?

Do not get stressed! I know it is difficult, but it is much better to have your house dirty than to miss the opportunity to spend time with your kids. Time goes by so fast!

Be sure to organize your priorities. You are not a superhuman. Permit yourself to make mistakes and learn from them. You are doing it great!
